Tafqit
How does it work?
Tafqit (writing numbers as words) is mandatory on cheques and accounting invoices in Saudi Arabia and across the Arab world. Its purpose is to prevent tampering by adding zeros or changing digits after signing. The amount in words is the legal reference whenever digits and words conflict.
Standard tafqit structure
A formal tafqit follows a fixed pattern: the integer part (thousands, hundreds, tens, units) + the major-unit currency name + the decimal part + the sub-unit name + the legal closer 'فقط لا غير'.
Worked example
Amount: 1,234.56 Saudi Riyal:
- Integer: 1,234
- Tafqit: ألف ومئتان وأربعة وثلاثون ريالاً سعودياً
- Decimal: 56 halalas
- Decimal tafqit: ستة وخمسون هللة
- Full result: ألف ومئتان وأربعة وثلاثون ريالاً سعودياً وستة وخمسون هللة فقط لا غير
Sub-units used
- SAR / AED / QAR: halala (1/100).
- KWD / BHD / JOD: fils (1/1000).
- OMR: baisa (1/1000).
- USD / EUR: cent (1/100).
- EGP: piastre (1/100).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need tafqit on a cheque?
To prevent tampering. If you only write '500', someone can add a zero to make it '5000'. Words can't be edited as easily — and they're the legal reference if digits and words conflict.
Does the tool's tafqit match what Saudi banks accept?
Yes. The tool applies correct gender/grammar and ends with 'فقط لا غير' as Saudi banks and formal cheques require.
Can I tafqit very large amounts like millions?
Yes — the tool supports any amount up to a quadrillion. Try 1,000,000 → 'مليون ريال سعودي فقط لا غير'.
How does it handle the decimal part (halalas)?
The tool rounds to the nearest halala (2 decimals) using banker's rounding, then writes both parts separately. For 3-decimal currencies (KWD/BHD), rounding goes to 3 places.
Are there other currencies besides SAR?
Yes — 10 currencies are supported: SAR, USD, EUR, AED, KWD, BHD, QAR, OMR, EGP, JOD. Each uses its correct sub-unit name.
