How does it work?

The age difference calculator compares two dates of birth and tells you who is older and by how much: in years, months and days on both the Gregorian and Hijri calendars, in total days, and with each person's age today. Enter each date in the calendar it is written in on its document.

How is the age difference calculated?

The age difference is the gap between the two dates of birth, not between the two ages today, so it never changes. The tool subtracts the earlier date from the later one: years, then months, then days, borrowing from the previous month when the later date's day is smaller. A Hijri date is converted to its Gregorian day on the Umm al-Qura calendar first.

Worked example

One person born on 15 March 1990 (17 Sha'ban 1410), another on 2 July 1994 (22 Muharram 1415):

  1. Older: the person born on 15 March 1990
  2. Gregorian gap: 4 years, 3 months and 17 days
  3. Hijri gap: 4 years, 5 months and 5 days
  4. Gap in days: 1,570 days, the same count in both calendars

Why the Hijri gap differs from the Gregorian one

A Hijri year is 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. The days between the two dates are the same in both calendars, but they add up to slightly more Hijri years and months — the Hijri gap grows by a year roughly every 33 years.

Born on 29 February

A common year has no 29 February, so a person born on that day completes the year on 1 March, and the tool counts ages and gaps that way. Likewise for day 30 of a Hijri month that has 29 days in a given year: the year completes on the first of the next month.

When you need it

  • Finding the age gap between spouses or siblings in years and months.
  • Comparing two dates of birth when one is written in Hijri and the other in Gregorian.
  • Settling who is older when two birthdays are days apart.
  • Getting the gap as a count of days, not only in years.

To count the time and business days between any two dates, use the time between two dates calculator. To see your own age today in both calendars and your next birthday, use the Hijri and Gregorian age calculator. To convert a single date between the calendars, use the Hijri and Gregorian date converter.

If the dates belong to your staff's contracts and papers, Snad's HR software holds contract, title, salary and documents in one file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?

Enter each person's date of birth in Gregorian or Hijri and the result appears at once: who is older, the gap in years, months and days on both calendars, and the gap in days.

Does the age difference change over the years?

No. The age difference is the gap between the two dates of birth, so it stays the same for life. What changes is each person's age, which the tool shows as of today.

Can I enter one Hijri date and one Gregorian date?

Yes. Each date has its own Gregorian/Hijri switch, and the tool converts a Hijri date to its Gregorian day on the Umm al-Qura calendar before subtracting.

Why is the gap in Hijri years different from the Gregorian one?

Because a Hijri year is 354 or 355 days and a Gregorian year 365 or 366. The same days make more Hijri years, so the Hijri gap grows by a year roughly every 33 years.

What if both people were born on the same day?

The gap shows zero years, months and days, and the tool says they were born on the same day, even when one date is entered in Hijri and the other in Gregorian.

Does the order of the two dates matter?

No. The gap is the same either way, and the tool says which person is older: the first date or the second.
