How does it work?
Overtime pay is the employee's right when they exceed contracted working hours. Under Article 107 of the Saudi Labor Law, an employee earns the regular hourly wage plus a 50% premium for every overtime hour — whether worked on a normal day, weekly rest day, or official holiday.
The formula (Article 107)
The hourly wage is derived from the monthly salary, then multiplied by 1.5 to get the overtime rate.
Hourly = basic ÷ (work days × hours per day) | Overtime rate = hourly × 1.5
Worked example
An employee with SAR 7,200 basic working 10 overtime hours:
- Monthly working hours = 30 days × 8 hours = 240
- Hourly rate = 7,200 ÷ 240 = SAR 30
- Overtime rate = 30 × 1.5 = SAR 45
- Total overtime pay = 10 × 45 = SAR 450
Ramadan working hours
Muslim employees' working hours are capped at 6 hours/day during Ramadan (Article 98). That raises the per-hour rate because the denominator becomes 180 hours/month instead of 240.
Working on rest days
Working on a weekly rest day or official holiday counts as overtime at the same 1.5× rate. There is no 2× rate in the Saudi Labor Law.
