How does it work?
The concrete calculator converts the geometric volume of a structural element into the bill of materials a foreman actually orders: cement bags, sand, and coarse aggregate. The wet volume is the physical space the concrete occupies; multiplying by (1 + wastage) builds in a buffer for spillage and over-pours; multiplying by 1.54 produces the dry volume — the industry-standard factor that accounts for the voids between dry aggregate particles before water reduces them. The dry volume is then split between the three components according to the mix ratio you select. Cement weight comes from the cement volume × 1440 kg/m³ density, and water is fixed at the standard 0.5 water-cement ratio.

Worked example — a 5 × 4 m slab, 15 cm thick
Inputs: shape = slab, length = 5 m, width = 4 m, thickness = 0.15 m, mix = 1:2:4, wastage = 5%, bag size = 50 kg.
- Wet volume = 5 × 4 × 0.15 = 3.00 m³
- With wastage = 3.00 × 1.05 = 3.15 m³
- Dry volume = 3.15 × 1.54 = 4.85 m³
- Cement share = 1 / (1+2+4) = 0.143 → cement volume = 4.85 × 0.143 = 0.693 m³
- Cement weight = 0.693 × 1440 = 998 kg → 998 / 50 = 19.96 → 20 bags
- Sand = 4.85 × 2/7 = 1.39 m³, aggregate = 4.85 × 4/7 = 2.77 m³, water = 0.5 × 998 = 499 L
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing wet and dry volumes — always order from the dry volume, not the cast-in-place figure.
- Using wastage 0% on irregular pours — 5–10% is the safe range for most slabs; up to 15% for columns and stairs.
- Treating the stairs formula as exact — it uses the standard waist-slab approximation; spiral or curved stairs need a manual breakdown.
- Forgetting that bagged cement comes in two sizes — a 25 kg bag count is roughly double the 50 kg count for the same volume.
Tips for accurate estimates
- 1:2:4 is the most common general-purpose mix in Saudi residential work; 1:1.5:3 is used for stronger elements (columns, beams).
- Add 2–3% extra wastage when the truck has to travel far — slump loss eats into yield.
- Round up to the nearest pallet of cement bags — distributors don't sell partial pallets.
- When in doubt about strength, ask your engineer for the design grade (e.g. C25) and use the matching ratio.
