How does it work?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is an indirect consumption tax levied on most goods and services in Saudi Arabia at a standard 15% rate. This calculator supports two modes: add VAT to a tax-exclusive amount, or extract VAT from a tax-inclusive price.
Add mode (input is tax-exclusive)
Use this when the entered price does not include VAT and you want to know the tax amount and the final tax-inclusive total.
VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ 100 | Total = Amount + VAT
- Input: tax-exclusive amount = 1,000 SAR, rate = 15%
- VAT = 1,000 × 15 ÷ 100 = 150 SAR
- Total = 1,000 + 150 = 1,150 SAR
Extract mode (input is tax-inclusive)
Use this when the displayed price already includes VAT and you want to separate the tax portion from the underlying base amount.
Base = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100) | VAT = Gross − Base
- Input: gross amount = 1,150 SAR, rate = 15%
- Base = 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = 1,000 SAR
- VAT = 1,150 − 1,000 = 150 SAR
Saudi VAT rates
The Saudi VAT system has three primary categories:
- Standard 15%: applied to most goods and services since 1 July 2020.
- Zero rate 0%: applied to exports outside the GCC, international transport, and listed medicines and medical supplies.
- Exempt supplies: certain financial services and residential rentals are outside VAT entirely.
Who must register?
Mandatory registration applies to businesses whose annual taxable revenue exceeds 375,000 SAR. Voluntary registration is allowed for businesses above 187,500 SAR.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive prices when pricing products.
- Applying 15% to a zero-rated or exempt supply.
- Forgetting to include the 15-digit VAT registration number on the invoice.
- Computing VAT on the post-discount amount instead of the pre-discount price.
