# How to add custom fields in Snad

To add a custom field in Snad, open **Settings**, then **Custom fields**, choose **Customers** or **Suppliers**, and press **Add field**. Type the label, pick the **Type**, tick **Where does this field appear?**, then press **Save**.

## Before you start

- A Snad account, with permission to manage custom fields for your user ([how to grant permissions](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/roles-permissions)).

## Steps

1. **Open custom fields.** Press **Settings** at the bottom of the sidebar and it turns into the settings menu. Then choose **Custom fields**. [Details](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/custom-fields#adv-access)

2. **Choose customers or suppliers.** **Customers** and **Suppliers** each have a tab with their own fields. Open the one you want ([customers](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/create-customer) or [suppliers](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/create-supplier)), then press **Add field**. 3. **Name the field.** Type the **Label (Arabic)** and **Label (English)**; one of them is enough. Snad fills the **Identifier** from the English label, and you can change it now. [Details](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/custom-fields#adv-key)

## Messages that block saving

| Message | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Enter a label in at least one language | Both **Label (Arabic)** and **Label (English)** are empty. | Type the label in one of the two languages. |
| Identifier is required | The **Identifier** field is empty. | Type an identifier in Latin letters, or type an English label and it fills in by itself. |
| Latin lowercase letters, digits and underscores only | The **Identifier** contains something the field does not accept. | Use only lowercase Latin letters, digits and underscores. |
| Dropdown requires at least one option | You chose **Dropdown** without adding any option. | Press **Add option** and fill in its value and label. |

## Advanced details

### The identifier cannot change later

The identifier takes lowercase Latin letters, digits and underscores only, and it cannot be changed after you save.

[Print templates](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/print-settings) bind the field through this identifier, as customer.custom.IDENTIFIER for a customer or supplier.custom.IDENTIFIER for a supplier ([how to build a print template](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/print-template-builder)).

### Field types

A field has one of nine types. The type is locked once values are stored under it.

- Text and long text.
- Number, date and checkbox.
- Phone, email and URL.
- Dropdown, with options you define; each has a stored value and an Arabic and English label.

### What each option means

The field always appears on the customer or supplier form under the **Custom fields** section ([how to add a customer](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/create-customer), [how to add a supplier](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/create-supplier)).

- **Required**: it must be filled in when you create the record or edit it from the full form. Imports, integrations and quick edits are not blocked.
- **Show in list**: it appears as a column in the list and in the Excel export.
- **Print on documents**: it prints under the customer or supplier details on [invoices](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/create-sales-invoice), quotations, orders, receipts and shared links.
- If the Bookings app is on in your account, customer fields get three more options: **Show on public booking page**, **Shown on the customer page** and **Customer can edit it**. Supplier fields get the first two only ([set up bookings](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/bookings-settings)).

### Limit, editing and hiding a field

The limit is 15 active fields for each of customers and suppliers. Once you reach it the **Add field** button is disabled and a “Limit reached” message shows.

To edit a field, press its row in the table. The **Edit field** dialog opens, and the type and identifier stay fixed.

**Delete** only hides the field. Stored values stay on the records and reappear if you add the field again with the same identifier.

Do not store health or sensitive data in custom fields.

### No Custom fields item? And booking fields

The page needs the permission to manage fields. Without it the add button is hidden, so ask your account admin to grant it ([how to grant permissions](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/roles-permissions)).

Booking fields have their own screen in the bookings settings ([set up bookings](https://www.snad.io/en/guide/bookings-settings)).

## Common questions

### How do I add a custom field to a customer in Snad?

### How many custom fields can I add?

Up to 15 active fields for each of customers and suppliers, each with its own tab.
